picWe’ve just made our final first day pick of that mock draft between we’ve been doing with NFL fan blogs from across the country.

With the 26th pick of the second round (58th overall), the New England Patriots select:

***S Louis Delmas, Western Michigan***

With their fourth and final Day One pick, the Patriots add depth and flexibility to their defensive backline. Delmas, an aggressive, physical run defender with enough speed and agility to be effective in coverage, is the choice. He’ll join Brandon Meriweather and James Sanders as the Pats continue to experiment with three safeties on the field as an answer to the proliferation of spread-out, multi-receiver formations. With a versatile, well-rounded game and solid football instincts, Delmas can end up down in the box or range back in centerfield, and the Patriots will like adding another character guy and vocal on-field leader. One concern is that he’ll eventually break down his relatively thin frame with his aggressive, hard-nosed style, but that’s what weight rooms are for.

With four first day picks, the pretend Pats have added one of the top players in the draft in Knowshon Moreno, addressed their linebacker and defensive line positions with Connor Barwin and Ziggy Hood, and now add another player to their secondary, one of their weakest points in 2008.
